Travelling to Belize is not recommended for just anyone! You see, if you don’t enjoy catamaran sailing, zip lining through jungles, snorkeling, beach lounging, rich culture, friendly folks and DELICIOUS FOOD- well, we recommend you seek a less awesome destination! But if you’re up for an awesome Belizean adventure, welcome!

While we Belizeans take our fun seriously, there’s one thing that’s definitely just as important:  FOOD! We love the real stuff, so leave your diets at home cause there’ll be no calorie counting on this vacation! There’s an endless list of delicious dishes but here’s our Top Five must tries:

  • Rice and Beans

A trip to Belize wouldn’t be complete if you don’t have a hearty plate of rice and beans. Available on practically every lunch menu across the country, this Belizean staple is served with yummy stewed chicken, potato salad and fried plantains. There’s a reason we love it, you will too! (Tip: It’s even better with a dash or two of Marie Sharp’s Hot Pepper sauce)

These fluffy jacks are made from the same flour dough used to make the tortillas you enjoy so much. After they’re fried up, feel free to enjoy it with just about anything from fried beans, bacon and eggs to honey or jam (or why not both)!

Meat pies are a quick and delicious treat. Perfect for grab and go, these tasty little pies are flaky and packed with either ground beef or chicken and are most certainly a must try! Many consider them a breakfast staple, but we could eat them any time of day!

  • Tamales:

Tamales are a delicious Mestizo dish of stewed meat, enveloped in masa (corn dough) then wrapped in plantain leaves and steamed to perfection. Bursting with rich flavor, it’s hard to have just one!

About the Author: Tamara Sniffin

I’m a sucker for a fuzzy face, a feathered face, a face with fins or even one with scales! I am in love with the creatures and the flora that are synonymous with Belize and every opportunity I have to learn more about them and explore their wild habitats I am there! I’m the happiest when I’m snorkeling the reef and swimming with turtles, however my passion is not just limited to critters! Laced throughout this compact jungle gem of a country live the Kriol, Maya, Garifuna, Mestizo and Spanish people, and experiencing each culture, especially their celebrations is one of my favorite pastimes.
