Art has a special way of bringing people together, and the Belize-Mex Exhibition, on display August 20 through 27 at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts in Belize City, is doing just that. Featuring the creative talents of Belizean and Mexican artists, the exhibition is a colorful celebration of culture, friendship, and artistic expression.

The exhibition features the work of 37 artists, including 30 Belizeans and seven artists from Mérida, Yucatán. With no set theme guiding the collection, visitors can enjoy an eclectic mix of styles and subjects, from Belize’s birds and wildlife to traditional wooden homes, seascapes, fauna, portraits, and abstract works.

According to exhibition curator Terrell Godoy, with help from his daughter, Rishma Godoy, the collaboration grew out of relationships developed through previous exhibitions in Mérida, Mexico. Belizean artists, including Fred Trejo and Marcos Manzanaro, helped establish connections with their Mexican counterparts, opening the door for Belizean artists to showcase their work in Mexico. Those experiences developed into lasting friendships, with plans for an exhibition in Belize, inviting the Mexican artists to participate seemed a natural way to return the hospitality and continue the cultural exchange.

Among the visiting artists is Beatrice Brown, who has been painting for more than 20 years. Her diverse body of work ranges from wildlife and landscapes to portraiture, adding yet another artistic perspective to the exhibition.

A San Pedro Artist Shares a Story of Hope

Representing San Pedro is artist Melody Sanchez Wolf, whose colorful work includes a deeply personal painting dedicated to her daughter.

The piece began without a clear direction. Sanchez Wolf initially envisioned a waterfall, but inspiration arrived unexpectedly during a day on the water when she spotted two dolphins, a mother and her calf, leaping from the sea.

That moment transformed both the painting and its meaning.

Sanchez Wolf’s daughter is autistic and currently non-verbal, and the image of the mother and baby dolphin became a symbol of their relationship and, most importantly, hope for her daughter’s future. What began simply as a painting evolved into an intimate expression of a mother’s love, optimism, and dreams for her child.

Her story is one of many represented through the exhibition, demonstrating how art can communicate experiences and emotions that extend far beyond borders and language.

The Belize-Mex Exhibition is more than a collection of paintings. It reflects the friendships that can grow when artists share their creativity, culture, and experiences with one another. From Mérida to Belize and from landscapes to deeply personal stories, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to see two neighboring countries through the eyes of their artists.

The Belize-Mex Exhibition runs August 20 through 27 at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts in Belize City, with a possible extension beyond August 27. Art lovers and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience the creativity of Belize and Mexico brought together under one roof.
