Belizean Artisans Celebrated in “HandmadeByBze” Exhibit 

On February 20, 2025, the Institute of Creative Arts launched HandmadeByBze, a traveling exhibit at the Museum of Art in the Belize City House of Culture. Showcasing the work of 27 Belizean artists, the exhibit celebrates local craftsmanship through handmade pieces created from clay, jippi jappa, calabash, bamboo, stone, wood, slate, embroidery, crochet, and butterfly wings—blending tradition with innovation.

Feel the rhythm of steel pans and enjoy the vibrant Caribbean culture!

Some sounds can fill our minds with vivid details of a place as they replay in full color: the gentle waves lapping at the beaches in Hopkins Village, the chirping birds and the whistling breeze in the Mountain Pine Ridge, and, of course, the unique musical tunes that make Belize special. Many people, including myself, can’t live without sound and music. Music speaks a different language to every individual, and music lovers find themselves drawn to the sounds they grew up with. One of my favorite sounds is the rhythmic play of Steel Pans to classic calypso tunes.

The Artist of the Day, Felene Cayetano

Felene Cayetano is an author, mother, publisher, librarian, and editor. Her migration from Belize to Los Angeles at the age of 9 was a key factor that led her to writing poetry in primary school before easing into writing short stories. This love of writing was balanced by a love of reading which gave her the vocabulary to voice her experiences and an appreciation for libraries.
