The Paddle boarding for Autism will be open to any child on the Autism Spectrum or with a Special Need and two of the child’s immediate family or caregivers. They will be invited, free of cost, to Kukumba Beach for a family beach day. During this day, children with special needs will get a chance to work one-on-one with a trained adult who will try to teach them to paddle board, engage them in the water and/or take them for a paddle board ride around the pool/lagoon. Children with Autism are instinctively drawn to bodies of water. Water experiences are understood to have a therapeutic effect for many autistic children, in part because water seems to provide a source of sensory and emotional regulation. Furthermore the participation of children with disabilities in recreational activities promotes inclusion, minimizes deconditioning, optimizes physical functioning and enhances well-being.
