Garifuna Settlement Day Events Calendar

October 10 - November 19

« All Events

With Garifuna Settlement Day approaching on November 19th, Ambergris Caye is celebrating the vibrant traditions, music, and cultural heritage of the Garinagu people.

The National Garifuna Council’s San Pedro branch has launched its 2026 calendar of cultural activities, beginning in October and continuing through Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19th.

This year’s celebrations embrace the theme “Uaraguni, Anichigu, Awanseruni, Wani Aunegu. Unity, Culture, Progress; The Future Is Ours.”

Festivities began with a Garifuna cultural fashion show on October 16th, highlighting traditional attire and its cultural significance. Upcoming activities include drumming at various locations across the island, Cultural Sundays at Boca del Rio Park, dominoes tournaments, a fishing competition, and Garifuna Awareness Day, all leading up to the November 19th observance.

More than entertainment, these events invite residents and visitors to experience and better understand one of Belize’s most treasured cultures.

According to Gene Lopez of the National Garifuna Council’s San Pedro branch, preserving cultural authenticity is essential. Traditional clothing, for example, carries meaning beyond its colorful appearance. Different garments serve different purposes, from everyday wear to ceremonial occasions, while certain colors hold ancestral significance.

Lopez emphasizes that sharing this knowledge, particularly with younger generations, is vital to keeping Garifuna traditions alive.

He encourages everyone to participate with curiosity and an open mind. “Come out, support, learn, participate in the different events, and understand the true nature, rather than listening to gossip.”

Garifuna Settlement Day, observed annually on November 19th, commemorates the arrival of the Garinagu in Belize and celebrates their enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural heritage.

For visitors to Ambergris Caye, the weeks leading up to this important holiday offer a wonderful opportunity to enjoy authentic Garifuna music, traditions, and community spirit.

Follow the beat of the drums, join the festivities, and celebrate the cultural diversity that makes My Beautiful Belize so extraordinary!

The timeline now distinguishes the October 16th fashion show (already held), the remaining October and November activities (upcoming), and Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19th (the culmination). Specific dates for the other activities have not been provided, so they remain grouped as upcoming events.
